Why Spiritual Growth Is Often Slow

We tend to measure growth the way we measure weather — by looking for a dramatic event. But most spiritual formation happens the way geology happens: slowly, beneath the surface, without an obvious single moment to point to.

This is disorienting for people who were taught to expect breakthrough as the primary unit of change. Breakthroughs happen. But they are rarer, and less load-bearing, than the daily unspectacular practice of attention.

If your growth feels slow, it may simply be growth. The question worth asking is not 'why hasn't this changed yet' but 'what small, repeatable practice am I willing to keep doing before I see the result.'
